Daz Thompson - SENSEI

My name is Daz, my journey in the world of martial arts spans over 11 years and has been nothing short of an incredible odyssey. It all commenced alongside my daughter, stepping onto the dojo floor to train in karate—a decision that seeded a profound passion leading me to achieve the revered rank of 2nd dan. The path was laden with challenges, yet the reward of mastering this traditional martial art resonated deep within me, filling me with a profound sense of fulfillment.

Throughout my martial arts expedition, I ventured into diverse disciplines, Delving into the artistry of Iaido, I proudly attained the status of a brown sash. Beyond this, my curiosity led me to explore ninjitsu, aikido, Ju Jutsu, krav maga, and wing chun, each contributing to broadening my understanding and approach to combat systems.

I then seized the opportunity to immerse myself in kobudo. The art of wielding traditional Okinawan weapons—the bo, boken, nunchaku, tanto, tonfa, and kali sticks. My journey even extended to the historical realm, exploring the craftsmanship and techniques behind medieval swords, unraveling the mysteries of weapons from times past.

My journey was not merely about mastering physical techniques; it was a profound avenue for personal development. With each discipline, I learned invaluable life lessons in discipline, respect, and unwavering perseverance.

Driven by passion to share my knowledge, I ventured into teaching martial arts. This journey isn't just about martial arts; it's an embodiment of resilience, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to a way of life that has become the very essence of who I am.

Lee Khan - SENPAI

I'm Lee and at the tender age of 12, I stumbled upon a world that felt tailor-made for me – the electrifying universe of martial arts. It was like discovering a treasure trove of disciplines, each one more captivating than the last. From the raw power of boxing to the calculated strikes of muay thai, from the grappling intricacies of Brazilian jiu-jitsu to the finesse of traditional Japanese jiu-jitsu, and even delving into the subtleties of wing chun and atemi jitsu, it was like collecting martial arts like they were prized relics.

But for me, martial arts aren’t just about the physical techniques. It’s about understanding the artistry and the philosophy behind every movement. Grappling, in particular, became my muse – an art form that harmonizes physical prowess with mental acuity. It’s not just about overpowering an opponent; it’s about understanding the intricate dance of balance, technique, and strategy.

My journey in martial arts has been an evolving story, each phase a new exploration into the depth of human capability. The dojo became my sanctuary, where respect was the currency, and where every lesson learned transcended the boundaries of the mat.

With every discipline I embraced, I uncovered layers of not just physical strength but also mental resilience. The hours spent perfecting a technique were not merely about the moves but about honing patience, focus, and the sheer determination to push beyond limits.

The beauty of martial arts lies not just in the mastery of kicks or the precision of punches; it’s in the camaraderie forged through shared sweat and struggle. It’s about the humility in realizing that there’s always more to learn, more to refine.

John Brett - SENSEI

I'm John, and my journey through martial arts spans over 40 years, beginning at 8 with Kyokushinkai Karate. Its competitive nature and focus on precise kata laid the foundation for my martial arts odyssey. Transitioning to Aikido in my teens, I studied under various Sensei in South Wales and Plymouth, affiliated with the Shin Gi Tai society under Shihan Gwyn Jones. Here, I delved into Japanese sword skills, mastering Kenjitsu and Iaido with the katana and bokken.

In my late teens, I trained under military and security service instructors, learning practical weapons and security skills. This led to an 18-year career in frontline security, protecting high-profile clients.

My martial arts journey took diverse turns, from Kickboxing to delving deep into Vale Tudo, an intense form of MMA. Unfortunately, a serious injury sustained during training shifted my focus away from competitive fighting.

In 2019, while introducing my daughter to St. Helens Martial Arts and Fitness, I met Sensei Adam (now Shihan). Engaging in conversations reignited my passion for martial arts. Invited as a guest instructor, I found a new avenue to share my wealth of experience and knowledge.

My journey isn't just about techniques or fights won; it embodies resilience, adaptability, and an unwavering dedication to martial arts. Each phase shaped not only my skills but also my character, reflecting a profound connection to the essence of martial arts—a journey that continues to evolve with every step.

Dave Briars - Instructor

• I.M.P.A.C.T. Combatives Instructor
• Over 35 years training/ teaching Martial Arts
• Qualified personal trainer
My personal approach to martial arts is a purely practical one. I began my martial arts journey 37 years ago at my local Judo club and then a year later I moved to Sport Kung Fu wanting to be able to copy the moves I saw in the Bruce Lee films. Although the elegant movements and acrobatic  techniques looked great and were fun to learn, I found them hard to use and fairly ineffective in any playground scraps I got involved in so I began to search out instructors that could teach me the more realistic side of the fighting arts.
My training took a much more practical turn when I joined the Royal Marines at 18. I was awarded my Green Beret and spent the next 6 years travelling the world as a part of a Commando Fighting unit learning from any unarmed combat Instructors could find.
Upon leaving the Marines I completed a close protection course and spent the next year as a professional bodyguard and bouncer before gaining qualifications in personal training with various companies including the National Academy Of Sport Medicine.
The style of Combatives that I teach is derived from the methods taught to Commandos and special forces soldiers during WW2 but with a more modern civilian focus.
The physical techniques are designed to be easy to learn and replicate under the stress of actual combat.
Because the content of the classes can be pretty brutal I do my best to make sure the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.

Angel Thompson - SEITO

I’m angel, I started my martial arts journey as a timid and withdrawn 5 year old doing Karate Jutsu and Kubudo (weaponry). I managed to reach level 2 in Kubudo with the weapons: Nunchaku, Bo, Bokken, Knife and Tonfa.
I worked my way up through belts in karate and managed to be the first ever “Junior Black Belt” within my club when I was 8. Due to being a high rank at this point, I began my instructing journey. After being awarded the title of senpai at 8 years old, I realised that teaching was what I truly wanted to do. Not only did it inspire me, but it also helped me to gain confidence and come out of my shell a lot.

I started to help out in childrens classes and pass my knowledge onto younger students. I then worked through that belt further and got my full, senior black belt when I was 12. Due to Covid, we needed to change dojos and so, we came across St Helens martial arts and fitness academy. Little after joining, I began instructing in classes again. When I did my first ever grading within atemi jitsu, I got awarded purple belt. A few months later, I got awarded my brown/black. Fast forward a few more months and I got put forward to do my black belt grading which I was quite reluctant to do as I had only been a part of St Helens martial arts for about a year and a half. After what might have been the hardest day of my life, both physically and mentally, I was rewarded with a black belt for atemi jitsu. Getting my second black belt for a different martial arts was so incredibly surreal as I never thought I’d ever achieve soemthing like that. Since this, it has only encouraged me to challenge myself more and has reminded me that I shouldn’t give up on something just because it’s hard.

Sophie Hammill - SEITO

Hey! I’m Sophie. Six years ago, I stumbled into the world of martial arts and found my niche in Atemi Jitsu at St Helens Martial Arts. Walking into that dojo was like walking into a whole new universe—it sparked a passion for self-defense and fitness that has become an integral part of my life.

Atemi Jitsu isn’t just about learning techniques. It’s taught me more than just how to throw a punch or execute a perfect kick. It’s been a journey of learning patience, respect for others and myself. But beyond that, the dojo isn’t just a training ground; it’s a sanctuary, a place where I've found a group of individuals who not only share my passion but also challenge me to be better every single day.

Recently, I've dipped my toes into the realm of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). BJJ isn’t just a martial art; it’s a mental chess game combined with the physicality of a full-body workout. The ground-based techniques and the strategic elements involved have pushed me in ways I never imagined. It’s a whole new world, and I’m absolutely loving the challenge it presents.

I’m eager to elevate my skills in both Atemi Jitsu and BJJ to new heights. Teaming up with fellow practitioners to learn and grow, and giving back to the martial arts community. I’m not just in it for myself; I want to contribute and be a part of something bigger.

Rezija Armstrong - SEITO

Hello, I'm Rezija, and for seven years, Jujitsu has been my guiding force. What began as a curiosity blossomed into a profound passion, propelling me through a transformative journey.

Transitioning from a dedicated student to an assistant teacher nearly three years ago marked a pivotal moment. Guiding others deepened my understanding, enriching my own practice with each lesson imparted. It's been a humbling experience witnessing the art's impact firsthand.

Achieving the esteemed rank of black belt reflects not just skill but resilience and unwavering dedication. The path was arduous, demanding countless hours of practice and an unyielding spirit. This journey represents self-discovery, perseverance, and continual evolution.

Beyond physical prowess, Jujitsu gifted me life lessons—patience, discipline, and composure under pressure. It's a philosophy ingrained in my character, transcending the mats to influence every facet of my life.

As I progress, my commitment remains steadfast—to personal growth and the art that defines me. The black belt symbolizes not just proficiency but an ongoing pursuit of excellence and an unwavering dedication to Jujitsu's principles.

Josh Gee - SEITO

Hey there, I'm Josh, and I'm all about the martial arts life. It's not just a hobby; it's become a part of who I am. My passion for self-discipline and constant growth ignited when I was a mere 7-year-old taking my first steps into St. Helen's Martial Arts and Fitness Academy. Walking through those doors felt like stepping into a world of endless possibilities, a world where discipline and respect took centre stage.

From day one, Atemi Jitsu captured my heart. Its intricate techniques and principles resonated with me on a deep level. I dedicated countless hours, pouring my energy and focus into understanding its nuances. Fast forward to October 2022, and earning my 1st Dan was a surreal moment – a testament to the dedication and sweat I've poured into mastering this art form.

But you know what they say about comfort zones - they're great places, but nothing ever grows there. So, I decided to shake things up. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu beckoned, its world a mystery waiting to be unravelled. The past four months have been an exhilarating rollercoaster. It's a whole new ball game, with a different rhythm, and I'm loving every moment of it.

Martial arts for me? It's a playground of pushing limits, a canvas to master new moves, and a classroom to learn life lessons masked in punches and rolls. Every session is a fusion of sweat, laughs, and that incredible feeling of progress. Sure, the belts are cool, but it's the journey that's the real thrill. Each training session brings a new challenge, a surprise waiting to be unwrapped.

Junior Instructors

At our martial arts academy, we take pride in nurturing not just skilled martial artists but also confident and capable leaders through our Junior Instructors program. As part of their learning journey, we encourage our young students to actively participate in teaching and leading roles within our classes. This involvement is not only instrumental in their own growth but also serves as a valuable teaching mechanism, allowing them to pass on the knowledge and skills they have acquired.

Our Junior Instructors are a vital part of our educational framework. They help bridge the gap between students and instructors by acting as relatable role models for our lower-belted students. Seeing peers of similar age and size who have successfully navigated the challenges of martial arts training provides immense motivation and reassurance. It sends a powerful message that with dedication and hard work, achieving their goals is well within reach.

This program fosters a sense of responsibility and enhances leadership qualities among our young instructors, while also instilling confidence in our beginner students. It creates a supportive and inspiring environment where everyone is encouraged to strive for excellence, reinforcing the belief that anything is possible regardless of age or size. Through this initiative, we are committed to developing not just martial artists, but leaders of tomorrow.
